Insight Card : Spice SE 89 C No.45 Le Mans 1991

Driven by Nick Adams, Robin Donovan, and Richard Jones, the Spice SE89C No. 45 competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 22–23, 1991, entered by Chamberlain Engineering in the Group C2 class.

The Spice SE89C was a versatile Group C sports-prototype designed by Graham Humphrey for Spice Engineering, introduced in 1989 for both Group C1 and C2 classes in the World Sportscar Championship and IMSA GTP categories. The No. 45 was configured for C2, which prioritized lightweight, fuel-efficient cars with smaller engines. Key specifications:
  • Chassis: Carbon-fibre and aluminium honeycomb monocoque, weighing ~756 kg, among the lightest at Le Mans 1991.
  • Engine: Ford Cosworth DFL 3.3-litre V8, producing ~450–500 bhp, tuned for reliability and fuel efficiency under C2’s strict 51-litre fuel tank limit.
  • Transmission: Five-speed manual, typically Hewland or Porsche-derived.
  • Aerodynamics: Low-drag bodywork optimised for Le Mans’ high-speed straights, with a top speed of ~320 km/h (200 mph) on the Hunaudières Straight.
  • Tyres: Goodyear, standard for Chamberlain’s entries.
  • Design: The SE89C was adaptable, with a lower weight limit (750 kg for C1 atmospherics from 1989) making it competitive in C2 against rivals like Tiga and Cougar.

Drivers

  • Nick Adams (UK, age ~40): A regular Chamberlain driver, Adams was a key figure in their C2 success, competing at Le Mans multiple times (e.g., 1989, 1990). He also drove the No. 27 in 1991, splitting duties, which was unusual but reflected Chamberlain’s driver management.
  • Robin Donovan (UK, age 36): A seasoned endurance racer with Le Mans experience since 1985, Donovan had driven Spices and Tigas in C2, including a 1989 Le Mans entry with Adams. His reliability was crucial for privateer teams.
  • Richard Jones (UK, age ~35): A lesser-known driver with limited Le Mans exposure, Jones was likely a pay-driver supporting Chamberlain’s effort. His experience was primarily in British club racing, making Le Mans a significant challenge.

Chamberlain Engineering

Chamberlain Engineering, founded by Hugh Chamberlain, was a British privateer team and Spice’s semi-official squad in 1991 after Spice Engineering’s financial struggles led to its sale to Jean-Louis Ricci in 1990. Chamberlain dominated the C2 class, winning the FIA Cup in 1991 with the SE89C, including five class victories in five World Sportscar Championship races. The No. 45 was one of two Chamberlain entries at Le Mans, alongside the No. 27 (Andy Petery/Nick Adams/Hervé Regout), which also retired.
