Safir RJ02 Cosworth No. 52
The Safir RJ02 Cosworth, bearing number 52, was a unique Formula 1 car raced in 1975 by Safir Engineering. Originally the Token RJ02 designed by Ray Jessop, it featured a low, flat aluminum monocoque chassis and a 3.0-liter Cosworth DFV V8 engine producing around 485 bhp. Its white livery with eclectic sponsorship decals, including Black Diamond, reflected its underdog status.
Tony Trimmer’s Spirit
Driven by British racer Tony Trimmer, the Safir RJ02 No. 52 showcased his versatility and grit. A 1970 British Formula 3 champion, Trimmer excelled in non-championship F1 races, driving an array of cars. 1975 Race of Champions
At the Race of Champions on March 16, 1975, at Brands Hatch’s 4.206 km circuit, Trimmer qualified the Safir RJ02 No. 52 in 14th among 21 starters. In the 40-lap non-championship race, he ran competitively until a disqualification on lap 33 for receiving outside assistance, ending a spirited effort in a rain-hit event won by Tom Pryce.
