Insight Card : Porsche 911 GT2 No.60 Le Mans 2000

Driven by Jürgen von Gartzen, Charles Slater, and Tom Kendall, the Porsche 911 GT2 No. 60, competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 17–18, 2000, entered by Konrad Motorsport in the LM-GT class.

The Porsche 911 GT2 (Type 993)

The Porsche 911 GT2, based on the 993 generation (1993–1998), was a high-performance, track-focused derivative of the 911 Turbo, designed for GT2-class racing under FIA and ACO regulations. By 2000, the 993 GT2 was nearing obsolescence, as Porsche had shifted focus to the 996-generation GT3-R for the new GTS class (replacing GT2). Key specifications for the No. 60:
  • Chassis: Steel monocoque with widened plastic fenders and a large rear wing with air scoops for engine cooling, typical of the 993 GT2’s homologation for GT2 racing. Weight was ~1,150 kg, lighter than the 911 Turbo due to rear-wheel drive and reduced interior components.
  • Engine: 3.6-litre air-cooled, twin-turbocharged flat-six (M64/60R), producing ~430–450 bhp, with 540 Nm of torque at 4,500 rpm. By 2000, some privateer GT2s had engine upgrades to ~3.8 litres.
  • Transmission: Six-speed manual, optimized for racing.
  • Aerodynamics: Featured a revised front lip, large rear wing, and shark-fin exhaust outlets, achieving a top speed of ~300–310 km/h (186–193 mph) on Le Mans’ Hunaudières Straight with a low-drag setup.
  • Tyres: Michelin, standard for Konrad Motorsport’s entries.
  • Homologation: The 993 GT2 was a homologation special, with 195 road-going units produced (including 23 Clubsport variants) to meet GT2-class requirements.

Drivers

  • Jürgen von Gartzen (Germany, age ~50): A gentleman driver with Le Mans experience, von Gartzen raced Porsches in GT classes, including a 911 GT1 for JB Racing in 1997 (23rd overall). His role was often as a pay-driver, supporting privateer efforts.
  • Charles Slater (UK, age ~45): A regular Konrad Motorsport driver, Slater competed at Le Mans multiple times, including a 1999 993 GT2 (No. 64, 18th overall). His experience in GT racing made him a steady contributor.
  • Tom Kendall (USA, age 33): A professional racer with a strong background in American series like Trans-Am and IMSA, Kendall was making his Le Mans debut. Known for driving Porsches in ALMS, he brought speed to the team.

Konrad Motorsport

Konrad Motorsport, founded by Franz Konrad, was an Austrian privateer team with a strong Porsche heritage, competing in GT racing since the 1980s. By 2000, the team ran 993 GT2s and 996 GT3-Rs in various series, including Le Mans and ALMS. The No. 60 was their sole Le Mans entry in 2000, painted in a distinctive livery. The team faced challenges competing against factory-backed efforts and newer machinery, relying on driver skill and car reliability.
