Insight Card : Lancia Beta Montecarlo Turbo No.67 Le Mans 1981

Driven by Beppe Gabbiani and Emanuele Pirro, the Lancia Beta Montecarlo Turbo No. 67, competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 13–14, 1981, entered by Martini Racing in the Group 5 (2.0-litre) class.

The Lancia Beta Montecarlo Turbo

The Lancia Beta Montecarlo Turbo was a Group 5 “silhouette” race car, developed by Lancia Corse with Abarth and Dallara for the World Sportscar Championship. Based on the 1975 Beta Montecarlo road car, it was designed to dominate the under-2.0-liter class. Key specifications for the No. 67 (chassis 1007):
  • Chassis: Steel and aluminum monocoque with front and rear tubular subframes, weighing ~780 kg, optimized for Group 5’s lightweight requirements.
  • Engine: 1.4259-liter (1425cc) Lancia inline-4, turbocharged with a KKK unit, producing ~480 bhp at 7,200 rpm (equivalent to 1996.3cc under FIA’s 1.4 turbo multiplier). In endurance trim, it could reach 540 bhp during testing but was detuned for reliability.
  • Transmission: Five-speed manual, developed by Abarth for durability.
  • Aerodynamics: Pininfarina-designed body with larger rear wheels and a low-drag setup, achieving ~330 km/h (205 mph) on Le Mans’ Hunaudières Straight. The No. 67 featured Martini’s iconic white, blue, and red livery.
  • Tyres: Pirelli, standard for Lancia’s factory entries.
  • Design: The car retained the Montecarlo’s mid-engine layout, with extensive modifications (e.g., widened fenders, aerodynamic cowls) to meet Group 5’s silhouette rules, which allowed production-based cars with significant upgrades.
The Beta Montecarlo Turbo debuted in 1979, won the Group 5 under-2.0-litre class in 1980 and 1981, and secured Lancia the World Championship for Makes in both years, outperforming Porsche in Division 2.

Drivers

  • Beppe Gabbiani (Italy, age 24): A former Formula 1 driver (Osella, 1981), Gabbiani was a rising star in Italian motorsport, known for his aggressive style. He competed in the 1981 World Sportscar Championship with Lancia, including a 5th overall at Daytona (No. 1009, with Alboreto/Ghinzani). Le Mans 1981 was his debut at the race.
  • Emanuele Pirro (Italy, age 19): A young talent making his Le Mans debut, Pirro later became a five-time Le Mans winner (2000–2002, 2006–2007 with Audi). In 1981, he drove for Lancia, notably finishing 5th at Daytona (No. 1010, with Facetti/Finotto). His speed complemented Gabbiani’s experience.
  • Riccardo Patrese (Italy, reserve driver, DNS): A Formula 1 driver and Lancia regular, Patrese was assigned to No. 66 but listed as a reserve for No. 67. He did not drive the No. 67, focusing on the No. 66, which retired early.

Martini Racing

Martini Racing, Lancia’s factory team, managed the No. 67 under Cesare Fiorio’s direction. In 1981, Lancia fielded three Beta Montecarlo Turbos at Le Mans:
  • No. 65 (Michele Alboreto/Eddie Cheever/Carlo Facetti): 8th overall, 1st in Group 5 (2.0-liter).
  • No. 66 (Riccardo Patrese/Hans Heyer/Piercarlo Ghinzani): Retired after 16 laps (engine failure).
  • No. 67 (Gabbiani/Pirro, with Riccardo Patrese as reserve driver): Retired after 47 laps (accident).
Martini’s 1981 campaign focused on select races, securing six Division wins (Daytona, Monza, Silverstone, Nürburgring, Le Mans, Watkins Glen) and the overall World Championship title, tying Porsche in points but winning due to more Division victories.
